The first time I played Citadels, it was almost hellish as I and another player had to get used to all the roles, didn’t really know what to do and I got bored when it wasn’t my turn. A player receives a number of points equal to the total combined gold cost of all the district cards in his city at the end of the game. The abilities associated with each character vary and include defensive, offensive, and bonus earning powers. It works, but fundamentally alters your strategy because you can plan in your first role to do something, like building a very high-value district card, in your second role.

Depending on your preferred strategy you might like to choose the Assassin so you can execute a formidable character, or maybe you would rather just steal gold from them and therefore pick the Thief. This edition of the base game was published in Germany by Hans-im-Glück in 2012 and is not available in English.Special Rule: The king card may never be displayed face up before drafting and must be shuffled back into the Character Deck then replaced. If applicable, you may now use your character's special ability, whatever that is, before you proceed to the main part of your turn.

The Spy picks a card type and gets one of your gold and a card from the deck for each of those districts you have in hand. Citadels is a fantastic introduction to more complex and other Euro games as well as a classic for experienced gamers. The 7th player has a choice between the face down card and the last card available at the end of the draft. The role cards are gloriously extravagant in size and, while the backgrounds are a little drab, the people depicted are so… alive!In this new edition there are 3 different roles carrying each number, so each game can feature a unique mix of roles. Once you have chosen your character for this round the remaining cards are passed to the left for the next player to select from, and so on, until all the players have a character. Each round, each player takes on the role of one of the citadel characters providing abilities unique to them and has uses in different situations in the game.The one disappointing thing with this new edition is that middle aged spread seems to have set in with a box that is much larger than it once was and no longer able to slip into a bag for a night out as easily as it used to. After the last player has chosen, the single remaining unchosen card is placed facedown in the center of the table. Add in new roles to worry about and the game feels almost painfully slow even with only 4 or 5 players, let alone the 8 the game claims to play up to (dear God, don’t play this with 8).
